What You Need to Know About Vaccinating Your Pet Puppies and kittens receive an initial series of vaccines during their first 16 weeks of life. After they have gone through their initial series your veterinarian will recommend a vaccine protocol that best fits your pet's lifestyle. No set vaccination frequency is right for every pet. Vaccinating your pet is the best way to prevent certain diseases in your dog or cat. Dogs should be vaccinated against rabies virus, distemper virus, adenovirus, and parvovirus. For dogs at risk of exposure we may also recommend vaccinating against leptospirosis and Lyme disease. They should also have a blood parasite screen yearly for heartworm, and three tick borne diseases; Lyme, Ehrlichiosis, and Anaplasmosis. Cats should be vaccinated for rabies virus, feline panleukopenia virus, herpesvirus, and calicivirus. Kittens and stray cats should be tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency virus. It is important to protect your dog or cat against these diseases. For more information on vaccinating your pet(s) give us a call. |
